Top Ten Tuesday! Books I'm Not Sure I Want To Read

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish.

These are the books you may have bought but aren't sure if you are into it anymore, books you wanted to read but heard mixed things about, hyped books you aren't sure about --- basically any book that has you going, "TO READ OR NOT TO READ?"

  •  The Program by Suzanne Young - I started this but it just feels different from what I thought it would be. I wanted to read this for so long and I'm pretty scared of disappointment.
  • City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare - I read the first half of this series and loved it and I think she should have stopped. Especially after everything I've heard. I don't know if I will ever read, especially since the last book was huge!
  • Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl - I saw the movie and enjoyed it. I have the first two books in the series, but every time I think "I should read." something stops me.
  • Paper Towns by John Green - I adore John Green and his writing but something about this book just seems hard to finish. I started it and I think I will eventually continue but now that it is being turned into a movie, the hype is so high. I'm not about hype.
  • Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris - I loved the TV show so starting this feels daunting. I just feel like I will compare it to the show at every turn.

  • No One Else Can Have You by Kathleen Hale - The cover of this is what drew me in, but then I messed up and read the reviews and since they're sketchy... I don't know. I want to believe there are beautiful words behind that cover.
  • Ashes to Ashes by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian - I love this series so much that I'm terrified to see how they will end it. I want to read it, but what if I'm disappointed?
  • I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak - The Book Thief is one of my favorites, and I somehow feel like if I read this and hate it it will taint my image of the author.
  • Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng - This a book about "others", and being an "other", I really really want to read it, but really really don't for fear that I'll end up angry or disappointed. Decisions. Decisions.
  • The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith - Harry Potter is amazing, amirite? With that established, I'm scared to read J.K.'s detective novels because they are so different from Harry that, once again, I don't want them to taint my image of the author.
Until next time,

  1. Nikki: I totally understand what you mean about not wanting to read the Sookie Stachouse novels. I'm the same way about the Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl! I'm like ugh I'm so going to be comparing the whole way through the series and I'm very much in "like or love" with the storylines the TV show writers are going with already. I feel like reading the books would make me have mix feelings about the show.

Keira: I feel you on the J. K. Rowling issue. I'm just not sure how I feel about reading her adult novels. I'm worried about being disappointed in the plot lines or writing quality. So I've been putting them off.

Thanks for sharing your list! Great post :)

  2. I thought about putting the True Blood on my list but I couldn't even get motivated enough to look for a title! I had no plans on reading The Cuckoo's Calling but I've seen some good things about it that are making me think about reconsidering. With all the books I've got piled up it will be at least a decade before I get to it though.

  3. I have Beautiful creatures on my shelf, and I want to read it, but I cant convince myself to want to buy the series incase I dont like book 1. But if I do like book 1 then I want the rest of the series there for me to read. Its an endless circle with me
I am very hesitant on I am the Messenger as well. It sucks when an author writes a great book. A book that is better than great, one that kind of changes your world. Because then you want to pick up more form the author and then it scares you, because what if it doesnt live up. Then Im just disappointed. I totally feel you on that one

  4. Oh yeah the Charlaine Harris ones. I can get that. It was one of the first I read (before the show came out) and you do compare them horribly. I just couldn't do the show.

I have this issue with the Immortal Instruments as well. I have them but just haven't been able to start them because of all the hype and book love. Worried they just won't hold up.

Thanks for sharing ladies! And for joining in on the Social Blogger! It[s nice to meet yall :)

  5. I agree, Anna. I read the books after the second season and the show was never the same for me.

It's nice to meet you, too!

  6. Exactly! There are certain authors I expect a certain standard from and when that standard isn't met I'm crushed!

Thanks for stopping by! I look forward to checking out your list.

  7. Oooh link me to you list, Katherine. I'm interested to see what's on it.

I think I'll read the Cuckoo's Calling eventually. I just hope it doesn't ruin my love for J.K.

  8. Exactly! I'm so torn between opening the book since it stares at me every time I open iBooks or just taking it off my shelf.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Nicole Lynn!

  9. Personally, I don't think you're missing too much by not having read Beautiful Creatures. I know the series has its fans, but I was less than impressed by the first book and have not continued on with the rest. I haven't seen the movie, though, so I'm not sure how the books stack up against it!

  10. A lot of times book to TV show adaptations are drastically different. I watched about ten mins of True Blood and found it way too dark for my tastes but the books were lighter, funnier, not so series. But I can see how watching the show first can hurt your chances of reading the novel. That's what happened to me with Pretty Little Liars although they're a lot different.

  11. I didn't put No One Else Can Have You on my list, but I should have. I was so interested in that book until the reviews started coming out.

I wasn't the biggest fan of The Beautiful Creatures, honestly I'd skip it. But then again some people rave about the series so what do I know! =P

Nikki, I liked Paper Towns, but if you don't feel like reading it then give it some time. :) It was a good read, but I much prefer Looking For Alaska!

Keira, I am also hesitant to pick up The Cuckoo's Calling! I LOVE Harry Potter but I don't feel that The Cuckoo's Calling is just the right book for me :(

I really liked Paper Towns, but I read it during a really difficult family time and I think it was the right type of escape for me at that time. I've loved all of John Green's books thus far. I totally agree with you on The Mortal Instruments -- three books would have been perfect! I've reads books 4 and 5 and they were all right, and have book 6 staring at me on my shelf. I'll read it one of these days, I suppose. I read the first two of the Sookie Stackhouse books. The first one is EXACTLY like the first season of the show, but the plot veers off course in the second book and I've heard they're quite different (books vs. TV show) after that point.
