Book Beginnings & The Friday 56 #1

Book Beginnings on Friday is hosted by Rose City Reader, the meme encourages to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book.

"The Friday 56" is also a weekly event, hosted by Freda's Voice, where you find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it) that grab you from page 56 or 56% in your book/eReader (If you have to improvise, that's ok.)

These are new features for us! I hope you guys like it.

Between the Lives by  Jessica Shirvington
Above all else, though I try not to think about it, I know which life I prefer. And every night when I Cinderella myself from one life to the next a very small, but definite, piece of me dies. The hardest part is that nothing about my situation has ever changed. There is no loophole.
Until now, that is...

For as long as she can remember, Sabine has lived two lives. Every 24 hours she Shifts to her ′other′ life - a life where she is exactly the same, but absolutely everything else is different: different family, different friends, different social expectations. In one life she has a sister, in the other she does not. In one life she′s a straight-A student with the perfect boyfriend, in the other she′s considered a reckless delinquent. Nothing about her situation has ever changed, until the day when she discovers a glitch: the arm she breaks in one life is perfectly fine in the other.
With this new knowledge, Sabine begins a series of increasingly risky experiments which bring her dangerously close to the life she′s always wanted... But just what - and who - is she really risking?

"I am a liar."

"The freakishness of my existence was bad enough, but the loneliness that constantly tortured me was far worse."

"I am a liar." is the first line of Between the Lives. Upon second glance, an unmannerly snort resounded and I though, "Aren't we all at times?" It's the same technique used to market We Were Liars. People love drama, and lies allude to just that, though, I doubt Ms. Shirvington was consciously using this as a plot device. My point is that, this opening line is engaging. It says a lot about the character. I, for one, was immediately enthralled and have continued to be.

In a world where everyone is gifted, be it in dancing, lightning-bringing, or death-giving, Ever is born…all-powerful.

For this gift, she is kidnapped and trafficked at birth. Fifteen years later, Ever still hasn’t seen even a glimmer of her powerful gift. Locked in an abandoned mall in New York City, she’s fighting to survive her captivity, her brutal guards, and the other gifted kids in her cell. She would do anything to escape.
Fox is gifted with time manipulation. Like Ever, he hasn’t come into his gift yet; like Ever, he hates the mall; and like Ever, he longs to be free. But there’s one thing he values above his freedom—it’s Ever’s love…

…yet, when the two make a desperate attempt to escape, this attempt proves so dark and twisted that it just might destroy Ever’s love for Fox.

"The black market was closing. The last sellers and buyers clustered behind an out-of-business toy store in Brooklyn, where the road smelled of trash and the subway trains that ran high above the street rattled the loudest."

"Lost in reverie, Fox gave the cloth a slow caress, then rose to his feet and marched past Sin and Demi to the hole in the wall."

Being from New York, the setting that the beginning of this book shows feels very familiar. Though I felt that it was very dark. I'm not too far into this book yet, but along with this first glimpse, it seems to give off a very dystopian vibe.

Until Next Time!
