I'm a creature of habit. There is something I like, I'll stick with it until I don't like it anymore. Even then, I'll still go back to it. So for me to pick up Him, my first Male/Male romance book, and actually love it, was shocking.
First thing I will say about this book is make sure you throw out all preconceived notions you may have. This may be one of the sexiest, romantic and hilarious books that I have read all year or ever. It was THAT good! This is the story of Ryan "Wes" Wesley and James "Jamie" Canning, and how secrets can ruin a friendship but also turn it into something much more.
Wes and Jamie are summer bestfriends. They met at Hockey camp and only saw each other for just a few weeks out of the year for most of their adolescence. Sometimes, the best friendships are the ones that are held in a bubble. When that bubble bursts due to a silly bet and sexual uncertainty when they are 18, a friendship is lost and both guys are left a little less after.
Fast forward to the end of college and fate has brought these two once best friends back together. Old feelings surface and new ones are discovered when Wes and Jamie are now coaches at the camp where they met. I won't go into much details because this is one ride you'll want to enjoy.
The one thing that I really liked about both Wes and Jamie was how their personalities complemented one another. Wes was the wild child, ready for anything jock and Jamie was the Cali bred laid back youngest of 6 goalie. When the two of them were together, the chemistry rose of the pages. Their friendship was the most admirable thing. Even with the lust in the air, you knew that each one of them cared for the other in a way only your best friend could.
When I went into this, I was expecting myself to assign usual gender roles to the characters. I assumed that I was going to go "Yep, he's the girl in this." and that didn't even come up. At the base of this, it's a love story between two souls that belong together and that is what I connected to the most. Also, the sex....
That good. So if you're looking for something different or just something that is going to make you smile like a fool after, then Him is the way to go. By the way, there should totally be a book just about Jamie's family because they were amazing!
