Book Review: Crushed by Lauren Layne (@_laurenlayne)

My Rating:
Growing up in New York, Michael St. Claire never expected to spend his twenties wearing cowboy boots. But that was before he learned about his real father, a total stranger with a family in Cedar Grove, Texas. Once in the Lone Star State, Michael meets Kristin Bellamy, who is exquisitely refined and everything Michael always thought he wanted in a woman. The only problem is that Kristin is dating Michael’s new half brother, Devon.
Kristin’s mouthy, curvy sister Chloe has always been in love with Devon Patterson. So when Michael offers to help Chloe break up Devon and Kristin, Chloe agrees to a deal that seems too good to be true. Before long, Chloe finally gets her man, only to make a startling discovery: She no longer wants the guy she had to fight for—she wants the one who stood by her side.
After all he and Chloe have been through, Michael swears he’s damaged goods. Can Chloe convince him that love is worth the risk?

Thank you to Flirt and Netgalley for a copy of this amazing read.

I've talked about how much I really love Lauren Layne's writing before in other reviews and this one is no different. Just to be corny, Layne Crushed this book!

Crushed picked up almost where we left off in Broken. Instead of a happy Olivia, we are are left with the broken Michael from the ending of Broken. It had been a while since I read the first book so when I started this, Michael felt like such a different person. All the cocky and arrogant bravado was missing and he seemed like the broody hot guy you want but are scared to approach.

I loved how he seemed to be punishing himself for all the trouble he caused in the past. I know that sounds silly but I think that carrying around this guilt really helped him focus on the task that had brought him to Texas, his biological father!

Yes! Michael is trying to get close to his half brother in order to find out more about the man that he should be calling daddy. But because Michael can't do something without a little devil in him, he tries to get to him through going after his girlfriend. I mean, didn't he learn his lesson before?

Of course, the girl is everything he thinks he should want. She is the perfect kind of girl that the old Michael would want. However, he is no longer the old Michael. Enter, Chloe Bellamy.

Chloe is the off beat little sister Kristin, the girl Michael is trying to bed. I absolutely adored Chloe. She was basically everything I ever wanted in a leading lady. She was snarky, funny, and gorgeous even when she didn't think she was. On top of all that, she was in love with Devon, her sister's boyfriend and Michael's half-brother. Talk about love square with drama sprinkled on top.

Usually I hate all those love shapes but something about this felt right. Maybe it was the way Lauren knows how to weave characters so it doesn't seem like it is drama for the sake of drama. Or maybe how real she wrote all of the characters.

I won't go into the love aspect of it all because who wouldn't fall in love with Chloe, and who wouldn't want to mend the broken, misguided heart of Michael.

This series is one of my favorite and may I say that Crushed was my favorite. Please go read!
