In Cassie Mae’s latest, The Real Thing, the friend-zone is a very crowded place. Mia and Eric are long friends who kept in touch through social media but due to fate, are living together for the summer. At first glance, it is just a couple of friends sharing a condo. But when you throw in unspoken feelings from both sides, things get a little complicated.

The line that these two danced throughout the whole book was a thin one. At times I found myself wanting to yell at both of them to just admit that they love each other but what fun would that be? The sexual tension was high between Mia and Eric but that was bound to happen.

When it came to the characters themselves, I ran into some issues. At first, I really liked Eric. He wasn’t your typical pretty boy. He was the ugly duckling who transformed himself into the hunky swan. Are there boy swans? I don’t know. Either way, he was adorable with his shyness and uncertainty. And I admired that he suffered from anxiety because you just don’t see that. That wore thin for me though. I found myself frustrated with him more times than I could count. Especially after things started to develop between him and Mia, I just wanted to shake him to be more… I don’t know, assertive?

Speaking of assertive, Mia was a trip. I found myself laughing at her a lot but not in a bad way. I found her tactics to get Eric to notice her hilarious. All I will say is waxing hurts like HELL! Mia I felt was a little more relatable, at least to me. She was addicted to social media so bad. I thought I was bad when it came to twitter and facebook, I felt she put me to shame.

Also, I thought the diversity in this was interesting and appreciated. This was the first time I had read a male lead or any lead for that matter that was Polynesian. I won’t go too much further into detail because that will just give all the good stuff away, but this was a cute and flirty read with a little drama thrown into the mix to keep it interesting enough.
