Book Beginnings & The Friday 56 #5

"Book Beginnings" on Friday is hosted by Rose City Reader, the meme encourages to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book.

"The Friday 56" is also a weekly event, hosted by Freda's Voice, where you find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it) that grab you from page 56 or 56% in your book/eReader (If you have to improvise, that's ok.)

T.G.I.F! Who's ready for the weekend? I know I am, if only for the reasoning of being able to sleep in. Any grand weekend plans? Maybe some scheduled reading?

From the acclaimed author of Brooklyn, Burning comes Guy in Real Life, an achingly real and profoundly moving love story about two Minnesota teens whose lives become intertwined through school, role-playing games, and a chance two-a.m. bike accident.
It is Labor Day weekend in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and boy and girl collide on a dark street at two thirty in the morning: Lesh, who wears black, listens to metal, and plays MMOs; Svetlana, who embroiders her skirts, listens to Björk and Berlioz, and dungeon masters her own RPG. They should pick themselves up, continue on their way, and never talk to each other again.
But they don't.
This is a story of two people who do not belong in each other's lives, who find each other at a time when they desperately need someone who doesn't belong in their lives. A story of those moments when we act like people we aren't in order to figure out who we are. A story of the roles we all play-at school, at home, with our friends, and without our friends-and the one person who might show us what lies underneath it all.
 "This is not my life."

I have read far too many paranormal contemporaries as of late. My initial thought was, "Who have you swapped with?" However, my line of thinking was quickly replaced with curiosity. This simple sentence can mean so much.

"Fry's butt hits the table behind him and he stumbles, but he doesn't fall. then he takes a heavy step toward me. Chairs scrape. Voices rise: "Fight." And he stops, which is a relief. I'm taller than him, but he's thickly built and could probably drive through me like a train through a garage wall."

Anna is looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. Which is why she is less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris--until she meets Étienne St. Clair. Smart, charming, beautiful, Étienne has it all...including a serious girlfriend.

But in the City of Light, wishes have a way of coming true. Will a year of romantic near-misses end with their long-awaited French kiss?
"Here is everything I know about France: Madeline and Amelie and Moulin Rouge."

I get where this girl is coming from. Being a New Yorker, I don't know much about anything else other than New York. Most of my experiences come from movies and TV. There is more that she goes on about but from this I think you get the gist.

"ARRRGH! He packs my clothes. Don't think about him touching your underwear. Do NOT think about him touching your underwear. I grab my travel outfit -- thankfully laid out the night before -- and freeze. "Um."

What's your book's beginning?

Until Next Time,

  2. Anna and the French Kiss was such a cute book. Any book, in any genre, about travel and I'm in.

Thanks for stopping by, Sandra! I'll be by your post soon.

  4. A break is always good. I'm currently reading a detective novel and that's out of my genre spectrum, though, I'm finding I really love it.

Thanks for stopping by, Laurel-Rain. I'll be by your post soon. Have a great weekend!

  7. That's two years more than I took, Claudia. ;) I am extremely interested in learning French, however. Maybe one day I'll make the leap.

Thanks for stopping by, Claudia! Can't wait to see what your post is for this week.
