My Rating:
From International Best Selling Romance Novelist, Hope Hughes, comes a gripping, heartfelt tale of two lovers, fighting for the freedom to…
No. Scratch that. Too cheesy.
…two people, torn apart by the tumultuous tides of life, only to discover refuge in…
WTF? What does that even mean? DELETE.
…two people, confused as shit as to where they should be and who they should love and none of this means a damn thing because it’s all lies!
Lies.
I’m not Hope Hughes. I’m not some fierce woman romance machine. Hell, I’m not even a woman.
I’m a liar.
And while I refuse to believe my own BS, deceit masked in heartfelt phrases of love and devotion, I want to make herbelieve them. Because maybe—just maybe—if she can find the soul within my words, she’ll also be able to find the truth scribbled on my heart.
You see, I once lived for the perfect plot twist.
I just never expected to actually live it.
This is my story. Well, maybe her story. I just wish I could make it our story.
The one I’m still writing.
This story is of a male author, August, who is moonlighting as a romance author under a female identity. Fiona is his best friend and the girl he holds on a pedestal. She is everything good in the world, or at least his world. But love? That’s something he doesn’t do. Of course he loves Fiona and his Grandfather but to be in a romantic relationship or to be just like the heroes he writes about isn’t August’s style. He’s a love them, right about them, and push them to the side kind of guy.
However, the routine he’s used to is disrupted when Fiona gets a new boyfriend. Everything he’s used to and the Fiona he’s used to is changing in front of him. Seems like not only is his personal life changing, the professional one is also on the brink of change when he gets the offer of a lifetime.
There are a few reasons why I couldn’t give this a full 5 star rating. First off, Fiona was the equivalent of nails on a chalkboard for me. At least, in the beginning of the story. I couldn’t get on board with her sunshine and daisy view of love. She felt unrealistic and over the top, I found it hard to take her serious. The only thing that saved it was August’s cynical nature. Sometimes he felt a little too cynical, but it felt more real.
Though, the thing I loved the most was all the pop culture references and how funny it all was. There were references to Twilight, 50 Shades, and even Jane the Virgin that had me snickering. What I wasn’t expecting was the book to feel very meta. When I say that, I mean that there were times that I felt like I was listening to the author really speak about her passions through August. There is one thing I will quote:
“You know that feeling after you’ve just read the words The End of something so incredible, all you can do is sit there and stare at nothing, clutching that book to your chest like it shares your heartbeat, unable to talk or move or even think of anything other than the words that have ignited magic inside your soul? You just sit there and feel it moving inside you, wicked tendrils of emotion that touch parts of you that you never even knew existed. I want to make readers feel so much that just for a moment in time, they become numb to the outside world, too consumed by the gravity of my words to feel any more sensation. I want to captivate readers in a way that feels like falling in love. The deepest, realest, most infectious type of love. One that never, ever dies.”In the end, this turned out to be deeper than I anticipated. It was a look on friendships and how much love can change a person or how much a person could change for love. Read this if you want to laugh and clutch your heart. And you definitely have to stay for the end and get your minds blown!
