Book Beginnings & The Friday 56 #13

"Book Beginnings" on Friday is hosted by Rose City Reader, the meme encourages to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book.

"The Friday 56" is also a weekly event, hosted by Freda's Voice, where you find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it) that grab you from page 56 or 56% in your book/eReader (If you have to improvise, that's ok.)

Love this meme. Love it so much I think I'm going blog diving today to see what everyone else shared.

I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga

What if the world's worst serial killer...was your dad?
Jasper "Jazz" Dent is a likable teenager. A charmer, one might say.
But he's also the son of the world's most infamous serial killer, and for Dear Old Dad, Take Your Son to Work Day was year-round. Jazz has witnessed crime scenes the way cops wish they could—from the criminal's point of view.
And now bodies are piling up in Lobo's Nod.
In an effort to clear his name, Jazz joins the police in a hunt for a new serial killer. But Jazz has a secret—could he be more like his father than anyone knows?

"By the time Jazz got to the field outside town, yellow police tape was everywhere, strung from stake to stake in a sort of drunken, off-kilter hexagon.

A crime scene already! Bang up way to start.

"This isn't going to be easy to hear," Jazz told her, already editing events in his mind: Connie didn't need to know all of it. "We remembered Ginny's real name was Virginia, making her a perfect match for the next victim," Jazz started, and then told her what had happened after that, leaving out the most gruesome details of Ginny's death and his own complicated reaction to it."

Make It Right by Megan Erickson

Max Payton lives by two rules:
Size and strength win any fight, and never show weakness.
When a rash of assaults sends Bowler University for a tail spin, Max volunteers to help teach a self-defense class. One of the other instructors is the beautiful pixie-faced girl he keeps butting heads with…and who challenges everything he thought he knew.

Lea Travers avoids guys like Max - cocky jocks who assume she's fragile because of a disability caused by a childhood accident. She likes to be in control, and something about being with Max makes her feel anything but. But during the moments he lets his guard down, Lea sees a soul as broken inside as she is outside. Trusting him is a whole other problem...
When the assaults ramp up and hit close to home, Lea and Max must learn, before it’s too late, that true strength can come from vulnerability…and giving in to trust is sometimes the only way to make things right.

"Max drained his cup of beer and closed his eyes to let the sounds of the party sink into his skin and down into his bones."

Having read about Max in the first book of this series, this sounded about right. But who hasn't had a drink at a party and let it just take you with the music?

"Max wanted to chuckle. Did he have a girl? No one really had Lea. If anything, Lea had a boy. Him."

Until next time,

  3. Both sound good! The 2nd one sounds like a fun read, and the first one sounds like a good murder mystery.

  4. I Hunt Killers is on my wishlist and I love the excerpts you shared. It definitely gets right to the point! Make It Right sounds like a fun read though it does sound like I may want to go back to the beginning of the series. I'll have to look for it!

  5. I'm still thinking of the first book. I never thought about what it would feel like to have a parent who is a serial killer. I had to write this title down.Have a good week.
